Our History

JCPM Group – History and Recent Expansion Founding and Growth

The JCPM Group is a prominent Brazilian family-owned conglomerate, founded by João Carlos Paes Mendonça. The group’s roots trace back to the 1960s, when Paes Mendonça entered the retail sector, expanding supermarkets and department stores throughout Northeastern Brazil.

Notable milestones include:

In the 1970s and 1980s, JCPM became a dominant regional force in retail. Following the sale of Bompreço in 2000, the group strategically pivoted toward real estate development and shopping centers, emerging as a leading player in Brazil’s mall industry.

• 1997: Entry into the shopping center sector via participation in Shopping Tacaruna.

• 2007: Inauguration of Salvador Shopping, known for its modern architecture and sustainability features.

• 2012: Launch of RioMar Recife, now one of the largest malls in the Northeast, renowned for its expansive leisure spaces, event areas, theaters, and diverse dining options.

• Today, JCPM is the fourth largest shopping center operator in Brazil, generating more than 50,000 direct and indirect jobs.
